समुद्र मंथन और नीलकंठ शिव की कथा
बहुत प्राचीन समय की बात है, जब देवताओं और असुरों के बीच अमृत पाने के लिए समुद्र मंथन हुआ। यह मंथन मंदराचल पर्वत से किया गया और वासुकी नाग को रस्सी बनाया गया। जब समुद्र का मंथन हुआ, तो उसमें से बहुत सी दिव्य वस्तुएँ निकलीं — जैसे लक्ष्मी, ऐरावत, कामधेनु आदि।
लेकिन मंथन के दौरान अचानक एक भयंकर विष (हालाहल) निकला, जिसकी तेज़ ज्वाला से तीनों लोक जलने लगे। विष इतना ज़हरीला था कि उसे कोई भी संभाल नहीं सकता था। न तो देवता पी सकते थे, और न ही असुर।
तब सभी देवता भगवान शिव के पास पहुँचे और प्रार्थना की कि वे इस संसार को इस विष से बचाएं। भगवान शिव ने करुणा से सभी की पुकार सुनी।
उन्होंने बिना किसी भय के, विष को अपने कंठ में धारण कर लिया, लेकिन उसे निगला नहीं, जिससे विष उनका कंठ नीला हो गया। तभी से उन्हें "नीलकंठ महादेव" कहा जाने लगा।
इस तरह भगवान शिव ने सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि की रक्षा की और देवताओं को अमृत प्राप्त करने का अवसर मिला।
शिक्षा / संदेश:
भगवान शिव त्याग, करुणा और बलिदान के प्रतीक हैं।
उन्होंने कभी भी अपने लिए कुछ नहीं माँगा, लेकिन संसार की रक्षा के लिए विष तक पी लिया।
वे सच्चे भक्तों के रक्षक हैं और बहुत जल्दी प्रसन्न हो जाते हैं — इसलिए उन्हें "भोलेनाथ" कहा जाता है।

The Story of Neelkanth – Lord Shiva and the Poison
A long time ago, there was a great event known as the Samudra Manthan — the churning of the ocean — performed by the Devas (gods) and the Asuras (demons) to obtain the nectar of immortality (Amrit).
Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod, and the serpent Vasuki became the rope. As they churned the ocean, many divine treasures emerged — including Goddess Lakshmi, Airavat the white elephant, and Kamdhenu the wish-fulfilling cow.
However, during the process, a deadly poison called Halahal also came out. The poison was so toxic that it threatened to destroy all three worlds — heavens, earth, and the underworld. No one could handle it — neither gods nor demons.
In great fear and desperation, the gods prayed to Lord Shiva for help.
Moved by their prayers, Lord Shiva, the merciful one, came to their rescue. Without hesitation, he gathered the poison and drank it to save the universe. But he held it in his throat instead of swallowing it, so the poison would not harm the world.
As a result, his throat turned blue, and from that day, he came to be known as Neelkanth (the one with the blue throat).
Thus, Lord Shiva saved the universe by absorbing all its suffering.
Moral of the Story:
Lord Shiva represents sacrifice, compassion, and protection.
He never asks for anything, but always gives selflessly for the good of the world.
He is the protector of the innocent and is easily pleased — that’s why devotees lovingly call him Bholenath (the innocent Lord).
